Cantaloupe is one of the most popular melons consumed in the United States. Although referred to as a cantaloupe, the cantaloupe in the United States is in fact a muskmelon. The cantaloupe has a rough and warty surface.
It is no wonder that the cantaloupe with its refreshingly rich flavor and aroma and minimal number of calories is the most popular variety of melon in the United States. Although they have become increasingly available throughout the year, their season runs from June through August when they are at their best.
How to buy a Cantaloupe?
There are many clues that you can look for to find a melon that is ripe.
- If you tap the melon with the palm of your hand and hear a hollow sound, the melon has passed the first test.
- Choose a melon that seems heavy for its size, and one that does not have bruises or overly soft spots.
- Cantaloupe is so fragrant that you will be able to test for its aroma of ripeness You might want to smell the stem end. If it's a little sweet it's probably ripe. If not, you can bring it home, put it in a paper bag a couple of holes with an apple and let it set on the counter for a day or two.
Nutritional Profile
Cantaloupe is an excellent source of vitamin A and vitamin C. Cantaloupe is also a very good source of potassium and a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B6 and folate.
Consumption Tips
- Choose cantaloupes that are firm but not hard. Reject over-ripe fruit that is yellowing and soft.
- The melon must be heavy, which means it is very full with juice.
- As melons are grown on the ground, it comes into contact with dirt and may become contaminated with human or animal waste. Just be sure that you wash and scrub it under running water before cutting it.
- Leave a firm cantaloupe at room temperature for a few days till its flesh is softer and juicier, then place it in the refrigerator to store.
- Cut melons should be wrapped and store in fridge if not consumed immediately. But remember the simple rule of always eating fruits as fresh as possible.
- When juicing, include the rind as well. Do not throw away the pulp and seed. Blend these thoroughly with a little pineapple juice and serve as a delicious nut milk drink.
